If your hair turns frizzy the moment there's humidity in the air, you've probably heard friends rave about "getting keratin done." But what actually happens during a keratin treatment, and is it right for your hair? Here's a clear, honest explainer from our specialist salon in Belfast and Carrickfergus.
What is keratin?
Keratin is the structural protein your hair is mostly made of. Heat, colouring, bleaching and daily styling gradually wear away the hair's smooth outer layer (the cuticle), leaving tiny gaps that make hair look frizzy, dull and hard to manage.
A keratin treatment — sometimes called a Brazilian keratin treatment or a keratin blow-dry — tops up that protein. A keratin-rich formula is worked into the hair and then sealed in place with controlled heat, smoothing the cuticle so light reflects evenly and humidity can't swell the strand.
How a keratin treatment works, step by step
At OK Beauty Hair the process looks like this:
- Consultation. We assess your hair type, condition and goals to choose the right formula and strength.
- Clarifying cleanse. A deep wash opens the cuticle so the treatment can penetrate.
- Application. The keratin formula is applied section by section and left to absorb.
- Heat sealing. The hair is blow-dried and flat-ironed at a controlled temperature, which bonds the keratin to the hair.
- Aftercare advice. We explain how to protect the result so it lasts as long as possible.
The appointment usually takes two to three hours depending on length and thickness.
What keratin does (and doesn't) do
| Keratin treatment will | Keratin treatment won't |
|---|---|
| Cut frizz and fight humidity | Make curly hair permanently poker-straight |
| Add shine and softness | Repair severely damaged hair on its own |
| Reduce daily styling time | Change your natural colour |
| Last roughly 3–6 months | Last forever — it gradually washes out |
If your main goal is deep repair of dry, damaged hair rather than smoothing, a hair botox treatment may suit you better. If you want a genuinely straight, formaldehyde-free finish — especially on curly or Afro hair — nanoplasty is worth considering. Not sure which is which? See our guide to keratin vs hair botox vs nanoplasty.
How long does it last?
Most people get 3–6 months from a keratin treatment. The single biggest factor is aftercare: wait 48 hours before washing, switch to a sulfate-free shampoo, and wash less often. Our keratin aftercare guide covers this in detail.
What does it cost?
UK salon pricing varies widely with hair length and the products used. At OK Beauty Hair, keratin straightening starts from £85 — see the full price list by hair length.
Is keratin safe?
Most keratin treatments are gentle, but the category has one important caveat: some smoothing products release formaldehyde (a known carcinogen) when heated. The formula we use is formaldehyde-free. We explain exactly what to check in our guide is a keratin treatment safe?
